Objectives: To assess the feasibility and limitation of clinical application of FRAX for Korean in Korean postmenopausal
women
Methods: Three hundred and twenty women with the data about clinical risk factors for osteoporotic fracture and
bone mineral density were analyzed with FRAX for Korean.
Results: One hundred and sixty eight women (52.5%) were diagnosed with osteopenia and their mean age was 57.9
years and among them, 79 women showed osteopenia only in lumbar spine with normal hip bone mineral density
(BMD). Only 7 women in osteopenia group were in indication for treatment by FRAX for Korean. Using FRAX
without BMD, 5.6% of women aged 50¢¦59 years and 5.7% of women aged 60¢¦69 years old were in indication
for treatment by WHO classification. Significantly lower proportion of women was in treatment indication using
FRAX for Japan, China, or U.S. Asian.
Conclusion: Using Korean FRAX model, significantly more patients with osteopenia were included in criteria for
osteoporosis treatment by WHO than using Japan, china, or U.S. Asian models.
